In 8/2007, the People’s Committee of Quang Tri, in coordination with the Political Department of the Ministry of National Defence, has organized the symposium on the preservation and restoration of the site of the ancient citadel of Quang Tri. It is a symposium to receive advices of scientists in the planning and upgrading of this site in the second stage.
In the first stage, realized in 1998 – 2003, the following works have been performed: scraping of the lake and construction of walls protecting the ditches; perfection of the central quarter of meditation; perfection of the fore gate (south gate), construction of the museum of the ancient citadel and arrangement of the interior, construction of the system of roads inside the site, plantation of trees with foliage, of pleasure plants, putting of stone benches, arrangement of parks construction of transformer stations, of the lighting system, of water evacuation.
The second stage is built on the basis of the first one, with the following main ideas, through 4 functional quarters:
- Quarter 1: construction of the relief model with the scale 1/50.
- Quarter 2: Upgrading of the actual museum and planning of the place to put the stele to the memory of the unities having fought at the ancient citadel.
- Quarter 3: Museification of the 81 days and nights of fighting at the ancient citadel of the army and the people of Quang Tri. This is the main place which has received many daring propositions.
- Quarter 4: Planting of yellow “mai”-trees.
The contribution to the project of the stage II of the scientists and of the officers is rather rich, according to which several problems remain to be clarified, such as the meaning of each district, the effect of these ideas when they are realized, the efficiency of the project, each detail of each district being examined.
One can say that the relative services have invested many time and labour to the project of the stage II with daring propositions, but we must study them carefully for the site to become a place of meeting for the visitors of the country and abroad.
