On October 5, 2018 at the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia, Dr. Nguyen Van Cuong – VNMH’s Director and Professor. Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the State Hermitage Museum, signed an exhibition agreement between the VNMH and the State Hermitage Museum.

Accordingly, a large-scale exhibition "Ancient Cultures in Vietnam" with more than 400 artifacts belonging to Dong Son, Sa Huynh, Dong Nai, Oc Eo Cultures of VNMH’s collection will be held for the first time at the State Hermitage Museum.

The State Hermitage Museum, founded in 1852, is located in the center of Saint Petersburg, Russia. This is one of the largest museums in the world. Over 60,000 of three million artifacts are exhibited in more than 1,000 galleries. In addition to a large number of antiques, the State Hermitage Museum restores one of the world's most valuable collections of fine art. With approximately 4,000 employees, the State Hermitage Museum receives approximately seven million visitors every year. The museum building and historic center of Saint Petersburg have been classified as UNESCO World Heritage.

This is an opportunity for the VNMH to display and introduce precious relics and collections reflecting worldwide the unique cultural identities of Vietnam to the public. Through exhibitions, international friends will better understand Vietnamese history and culture to promote the image of the country, develop tourism potential, contribute to mutual understanding, and cooperation between the two countries, Vietnam and Russia.

The exhibition will be more meaningful when it will be held celebrating the 129th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh on May 19, 2019. The leaders of the two countries agreed to conduct the Vietnamese Cultural Year in Russia and the Russian Cultural Year in Vietnam in 2019. This is a large-scale operation which is extremely important in promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the Russian Federation in all fields, including culture.
