Conservation

The preservation of artifacts has played an important role in the Museum. For many years, the VNMH has been interested in investing in preservation of artifacts. The storage systems are built and improved fundamentlly with necessary equipments to control the environments as technical requirement. The storehouses are divided into sections not only by the historical stages and origin of artifacts but also by materials to operate the equipment, control the temperature and humidity of the environment as technical requirements.

VNMH has conducted projects on preservation, restoration, education and training on transferring of the technical with the co-operation and support of some international organizations in others countries like USA, Netherlands, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Germany and so on. As a result, the conservators of the VNMH and many museums across the country have the opportunity to learn and update the knowledge of preservation in some advanced countries for the enhancement of professional qualification.

In addition, the Museum has invested a laboratory with specialized and necessary equipments and machineries for the preservation and treatment of artifacts. Over the years, many collections of different materials have been well preserved at the museum. Typically, bronze collections of Dong Son culture have been preserved by advanced and modern procedures adapted to the environmental conditions of Vietnam. Many paper artifacts and documents have been repaired and restored according to the standard procedures guided by international experts. The VNMH has also applied the technology of nitrogen gas to kill harmful insects on organic materials. It is a non-destructive method for artifacts and the environment which is highly appreciated by experts. Some lacquered artifacts have been well repaired and restored by Museum conservators in collaboration with some lacquer craftsmen by combining the traditional methods with the museological preservation principles. A large number of ceramic and terracotta artifacts have been successfully restored as ICOM standards for use in research and exhibition.
