Vietnam National Museum of History

Permanent exhibition

With a total area of 3,700m2, the VNMH’s display system introduces many National Treasures and nearly 8,000 valuables exhibits at two locations: No. 1, Tràng Tiền street (introduction of the Vietnamese history from prehistory to the end of the Nguyễn Dynasty in 1945) and No.216, Trần Quang Khải street (introduction of the Vietnamese history from the mid 19th century to the present). These exhibits are valuable heritages bearing the past’s messages and the essence of the Vietnamese culture. By visiting the VNMH, the public will understand more about the long cultural history and resilient struggle tradition in the process of building and defending the nation of Vietnam.

The exhibition system of VNMH is regularly supplemented and upgraded with the orientation of popularity - academic - modernity - attraction to satisfy the increasing demand of the public.

I. Display system of Vietnamese history from the History to the end of Nguyen dynasty in 1945 (at No.1, Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi)

1. Permanent Exhibition

1.1. Vietnam in the Prehistoric Times (c. 500,000 – 400,000 to 4,000 BP).

1.2. Vietnam in the first state foundation period (c. 4,000 BP to the 3rd century BC)

1.3. Vietnam in the 10 first century AD.

1.4. Vietnam from the 10th to the Mid-20th century AD.

+ Ngô - Đinh - Early Lê Dynasties (938 – 1009 AD.)

+ Lý – Trần Dynasties (1009 – 1400 AD.)

+ Hồ Dynasty (1400 – 1407 AD.)

+ Later Lê – Mạc – Restored Lê Dynasties (1428 – 1788 AD.)

+ Tây Sơn Dynasty (1778 – 1802 AD.)

+ Nguyễn Dynasty (1802 – 1945 AD.)

2. Collections

- Collection of Champa Stone Sculpture (from 7th to 13th century AD.)

- Collection of the Óc Eo - Funan Culture (from 5th to 13th century AD.)

- Collection from the Early 20th century AD

3. Open air exhibition

- Collection of artworks from the Ly-Nguyen dynasties (from 11th to 20th century)

- Collection of Champa stone sculpture and inscribed stelae

II. Exhibition system of Vietnamese history from the 19th century to the present (at No.216, Tran Quang Khai, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi)

1. Permanent exhibition

1.1. The struggles for independence of the Vietnamese people (1858-1945)

1.2. Thirty years of resistance against foreign invaders to sustain independence and unify the country (1945-1975). The resistance against French colonialism (1946-1954) and The resistance against American Imperialism, liberation of the South and unification of the country (1955-1975).

1.3. Vietnam on the path of building a prosperous people, strong country, and a fair, democratic and civilised society (1976 to present).

2. Collection: Gifts from the Vietnamese people and international friends to the President Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party of Vietnam

3. Open air exhibition: Introduction of some large sized artifacts with great historical value.
