Buddhist statue, wood, 5th – 7th centuries AD., Oc Eo culture

Buddhist statue, wood, 5th – 7th centuries AD., Oc Eo culture

The standing statue is carved on a lotus pedestal. The Buddha has a slender body, spiral hair, a delicate face, and a high nose. His left shoulder is bare and the right shoulder is covered with a robe. His hands are in a preaching posture. To present, numerous wooden statues of similar style have been discovered in the South of Vietnam, such as in An Giang, Kien Giang, Dong Thap and Long An provinces. In addition to the rich source of wooden statues discovered, ancient Chinese documents also provide information about Buddhism in Funan Kingdom. For example, in 484, 503, 519 AD., the kings of Funan sent Indian monks or Funan monks to bring tribute products and Buddhist statutes to China. This proves that Buddhism was given much attention and highly developed, and the worship of Buddhist wooden statues was characteristic of Buddhism in Funan in this period.
