Collection of incense burners, censers, bronze, Nguyen dynasty, 19th century to early 20th century AD

Bronze objects are popular in the life of the Viet people. Objects for domestic uses are simply decorated while those for religious or ritual purposes are carefully cast and carved which requires the casting to be an art. This collection of bronze artefacts from the Nguyen dynasty is composed of lidded censers, incense burners and vases which are decorated with such motifs as dragons, unicorns, trigram, the longevity character, flowers, leaves, fruits and animals. These special artefacts were cast in the famous (and still operating) centers of bronze-making: Dai Bai (Bac Ninh province), Ngu Xa (Hanoi city), Phuong Duc (Hue), etc. The collection not only reflects the high development of bronze casting techniques in Vietnam, but also the rich and diverse cultural and religious life of the Vietnamese peoples in this period.
