Male figurine statue, jade, Phung Nguyen culture, discovered in the archaeological site of Van Dien commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi,c. 4,000-3,500 BP.,

The statue is 3.6 cm high, showing the male figurine in his half kneeling, half standing position. There is a hole on top of the statue’s head for hanging a pendant amulet. The face was made according to conventional proportion but still very vivid; the sex organ was especially clearly illustrated. The statue not only shows a high level of skill in stone making, but also reflects fertility beliefs of rural population in this period.
